She's 25 Weeks Today

So, if you don't already know, we had an announcement about 12 weeks ago.

09 12 23 Little Miss Cachew 20 Weeks

Even though she's yet to take her first breath of our increasingly warm atmosphere, I'm starting to learn a bit about her nature: She's a cruel joker.

Betsey and I were enjoying a pleasant sunny Saturday morning, and we decided to go get the car cleaned. On the way we saw the ugliest most adorable couple you ever saw. They were at a bus stop, they were facing each other, their hands in the other's, bodies close, completely loving each other's company. It was just like out of a movie, except they were homely.

So we get to the car wash, and surprise, everyone else chose the first sunny day in forever to wash their car. We decided not to idle our car in line (see warm atmosphere problem), and turned around back the way we came. In doing so, it occurred to us that we might get to see this adorable couple again.

Now, here's the thing about driving a car. There are several things you shouldn't do while driving. You shouldn't text. You shouldn't use a cell phone. You shouldn't eat. You shouldn't drink. You shouldn't look out your window trying to spot a cute ugly couple at a bus stop. In the latter case, what happens, is you return to looking at the road and realize you're about to rear end another vehicle, unless you make immediate and effective use of your breaks and the ABS, which I did, and we came to a screeching halt.

So, I'm also learning that a good deal of being a parent, is worrying. The first thing in my mind after the car halted, nay before the car fully halted but as Betsey braced herself against the ceiling, was a fear for my child's safety.

Now we turn to the character of my child. She is undoubtedly brilliant. I have her mother to thank for that. She is undoubtedly funny, and I'll give myself the credit for that. If she's mean to her parents, well that might come from me as well.

She must have figured, "Hey, that was pretty unusual, I bet mom and dad are worried about me. I know, I'll see how long I can not kick mom for or at least reduce my actions."

She's been a pretty regularly wriggly girl since Betsey started feeling anything. So the rest of the afternoon: nothing. So we took her out that night to a Jazz Quintet at Calapooia: maybe a kick. Sunday: a few murmurings maybe. Monday afternoon, she figures she's been funny enough, starts squirming like normal.

I get a text from Betsey. I can breath again. Not funny little girl. Not funny!

We'll have a heart to heart about what's funny and what's cruel at some point I'm sure. Until then, I'm just pleased beyond happiness to know she's ok.

I've told this story to other people. The people with kids always laughed. My boss at work laughed the hardest.

On Monday, before the text, all while laughing, "Yeah, you know, our nomadic ancestors never encountered jarring forces. The human body isn't designed to protect a baby from the occasional fall, bump, or scrape. You should get Betsey in a massive pool and keep her there until the baby is ready."

It actually made me feel better.

So she's 25 of 40 weeks today, and I'm 23 weeks a parent. Thank gods I've got the rest of my life to get good at this.

Two Months

It's been 2 months without a post. It's been a fairly quiet time.

I took a run.

Resolution Complete

We found a dentist we really like.

We had a fun day out with James's family where they came to Corvallis to visit us.

That pitch went far!

We filed our taxes and ended up owing.

In addition to slowing running through the B5 series with our neighbor, we started quickly moving through the Battlestar Galactica series. We're almost mid-way through season 3. In comparison, we just started season two of B5.

New Obsession

We took a trip to Portland to celebrate a friend's birthday.

We took trip to Grants Pass to celebrate my mum's birthday.

Mum's Birthday 04

We had a happy Easter.

I had a tour of the new Salem hospital before it opened with the Salem Young Pros group.

We saw our first 3D movie - Monsters vs. Aliens. The 3D is very well done. This is not the 80's red and blue technology. It's polarization used to achieve a wonderful effect.

We went to a barbecue at the Thomas's house.

I started learning to sail as part of a sail boat racing team.

We saw the new Star Trek movie, which is also worth seeing. We saw with a large group and followed it up with great sushi at Masu, also recommended.

During all of this, we started seriously looking to buy a home. It's exciting and a lot of work. We've a great Realtor and she's shown us many homes already. Hopefully, soon, we'll find one that really speaks to us.

Some of these things may have made good blog posts. For the ones with pictures, you can click through to each picture and get a small description of the event.

So why the lack of posts? For the first month, it was just laziness. Right when I may have snapped out of it, I started playing a free online first person shooter to try to win a new PC. Unfortunately, I became hooked. I play a lot now, and I'm not keeping up with my online social networks.

Beer Blogging & Babylon 5

On Wednesday, we finally managed to make it to a Corvallis Beer & Blog session. Beer & Blog is a Portland creation that is spreading fast and furious around the world. This week's session, held at Cloud 9, was about embedding video inside blogs. *yawn* I'm more excited about the prospect of meeting more people in town and socializing over a beer. I ran into an old teacher of mine, John Sechrest, at this weeks meeting, and Betsey met a wonderful woman named Hope that may be able to help her with Medical Physics grants.

After filling up on happy hour beer and food (mac & cheese for her, apricot hot wings for him), we headed over to Nate's to start a long journey through the entire Babylon 5 sci-fi series. We watched the pilot and the first episode of season one. It's not great yet, but we can see the promise of greatness and we're excited for that.

Folks, Quotes, Baby and Beer

This weekend my parents came to visit. They came up Saturday afternoon and treated us to nice dinner at McMenamins. After dinner, we went home and watched "Across the Universe" on demand. I'm a sucker for musicals, I think, and it is no surprise to me that I truly enjoyed this one. I highly recommend watching if you enjoy either a) musicals or b) Beatles music.

My parents kept having flashbacks when they saw the scenes filmed in Liverpool. They were cute, even if their interjections were a little annoying (think people talking in the theater). My dad threw out a great old quote that I just have to share.

"What you gain on the roundabouts you lose on the swings."

Apparently, this is an old carny (carnival worker) saying. The kids would pay to ride on the roundabouts, but the swings were free and they would play on those too (imagine).

The next night, we were treated to a visit by our dear blogging friend from "The Turn of the Sue". She brought over baby Soren and grandma. We love Soren, and he received plenty of attention.

Then Monday came. Mondays, however, just became a little easier to handle. The carpool stopped at the pub and found out that pints are only $3 on Mondays. Woohoo!

Tweet Tweet - Worlds Integrate
I recently joined Twitter. You can read my latest tweets on the right side of this blog. They also post over to my Facebook profile. If Mrs. Catchpole ever starts tweeting, we'll get her set up similarly. In addition, blog posts should start showing up as notes on Facebook. This will be the first test.
